Bengaluru, 5 Sept
Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike
(BBMP) and Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) are set to work together to
implement solid-waste management practices of Chennai in Bengaluru. Deputy
Chief Minister DK Shivakumar has asked BBMP Chief Commissioner Tushar Girinath
to constitute a team to study biomining and other waste-management projects in
Chennai to check their feasibility in Bengaluru.
Biomining is extracting metals from
ores and other solid materials, typically using micro-organisms. Biomining
reduces carbon dioxide emissions and also helps produce refuse-derived fuel as
an alternative to coal in cement factories.
Top officials attached with Chennai
Mayor R Priya’s office told Salar News that Shivakumar during his visit to
Chennai on Tuesday was keen to bring Chennai Corporation’s know-how on
solid-waste management to Bengaluru. He had told the officials that GCC’s
waste-to-energy plants are a model to follow.
Shivakumar said in Chennai that
waste-to-energy is a main issue nationwide and Chennai serves as a model for
this, generating power from waste. Lauding the efforts of the Chennai Corporation,
the Deputy Chief Minister said since 2021, Chennai city has processed 79,762
tonnes of waste and generated 1,357MT of bio-CNG from it. With a 1.4 crore
population, Bengaluru generates more waste than Chennai which is home to 96
lakh people, Shivakumar said.
BBMP has identified Doddaballapur
taluk, Mandur in Mahadevapura, Bidadi, Gollahalli on Bannerghatta Road to
process City’s waste. Bengaluru generates 6,000 metric tonnes of
municipal waste every day. —Salar News
